The sun is intense, searing exposed skin and causing steam to rise off of the pavement. Everyone braving the weather is red-faced and sweating. People scurry from home to car to businesses, taking full advantage of the relief various types of air conditioners provide. Air conditioners are standard features for home and car and no business can afford to do without.
There are several types of air conditioners, including an automobile air conditioner, window room air conditioner, portable air conditioner, ductless air conditioner and central air.
Cars get very hot in the summer, especially when parked with closed windows. The quickest way to cool-off a car and travel comfortably during hot weather is to use one of the types of air conditioners made for automobiles. The condensing and cooling machine for the automobile air conditioner is usually located under the hood of the vehicle, while the vents pushing cold air into the car are inside on the dashboard. Some cars have extra vents located on doors, the central console or ceiling to provide cool air to passengers sitting in the back seats. However, running an automobile air conditioner uses more gas, so there is an additional operating expense.
There are many types of air conditioners made for use in the home. The cheapest types of air conditioners to purchase are the window or wall mounted room air conditioner. These types of air conditioners can fit easily into a window or mounted in a hole in the wall. Either way, these types of air conditioners need to be partially outside to emit hot exhaust air, while the cold air is being blown inside.
Window or wall mounted room air conditioners cost around $100-$400. While the initial purchase price is the most affordable, window or wall mounted room air conditioners make noise and are not the most efficient types of air conditioners. These types of air conditioners can cost more to operate long term than central air, especially if you want every room in a home to be cool. The higher the Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) the less the air conditioner will cost to operate.
A portable room air conditioner is one of the types of air conditioners made for cooling one room. A portable room air conditioner is set on wheels and rolls easily to different locations in the home. A portable air conditioner requires the exhaust vent tube to be placed in an open window, but does not block the window light. It is also possible to get more efficient and more powerful models of portable air conditioners than window or wall mounted types of air conditioners.
Ductless types of air conditioners do not require installation of ducts in the home. The noisy part of the air conditioner, the condensing unit, is located outside of the building. The two to four machines providing the cold air are mounted on the walls or ceiling and connected to the condensing unit. These ductless types of air conditioners are cheaper to install than central air and work well in homes with open floor plans. Noise is reduced compared to room air conditioners, but ductless are more expensive to purchase. Cost varies depending on the options selected, but starts at around $1,000.
Split air conditioning systems, usually called central air, are the most efficient for cooling a large area. Ducts must be installed to pipe the cold air throughout the home, but the return air ducts have the added benefit of filtering allergens and pollutants from the air. A central thermostat allows easy temperature adjustment for the space and evenly cools throughout the home. Large businesses almost always use central air. Central air conditioning systems must be installed by a professional and can be expensive.
All of these types of air conditioners can be purchased at specialty air conditioning companies. Stores that sell appliances may have some of the types of air conditioners available; window or wall mounted, portable and ductless. These three types of air conditioners can also be purchased online.
Anyone can choose from these types of air conditioners to suit their cooling needs. From the low purchase price of a window or wall mounted air conditioning unit, to the expensive but efficient central air system, there are types of air conditioners to fit almost any financial situation. To many living in a climate where it is swelteringly hot, the relief of escaping the heat is worth the purchase price and operating cost of an air conditioner.
